burkwell_group_home.jpgNow covering three counties in Western North Carolina, Hand Up Homes for Youth, Inc. originally opened our doors in North Carolina in September 2000. The Residential Treatment Programming is designed to serve sexually abusive and sexually reactive male youth ranging in age from 11 to 18. We now have the capacity to serve up to 20 clients. Our Residential Treatment Programming works closely with families in order to create a higher likelihood of positive results for our youth and greater safety for the community. Hand Up Homes for Youth, Inc. Residential Treatment Programming uses Offense-Specific Family Therapies and Multi-Family Therapy to focus on clarification, support and development of the family regarding offense specific issues, strength and asset building and reunification.

Also lending to our program’s success is our Team Approach and Cognitive Behavioral program. We attempt to incorporate various types of experiential learning and therapies such as tower climbing, wilderness trips, and ropes courses, equine and other animal-assisted learning and care. We strongly support having Child and Family Treatment Team meetings on a monthly basis. All members of the youth’s Child and Family Team are responsible for ensuring the youth is held accountable and maintained in a safe and therapeutic manner. With our small size and family-style settings, we are able to offer individualized treatment to clients with a wide-variety of needs; these specifically include working with not only youth with sexual reactivity and/or offending issues but also youth that may have dual diagnoses and behavior management issues.

Other key core elements of our Residential Living Program include: Support, Accountability, and Structure.

burke_day_treatment.jpg In partnership with the public school system, Hand In Hand Day Treatment Programs provide clients both males and females, middle to high school (approximately ages 11 to 19) with intensive clinical and experiential services incorporated with academics that are provided by the public school system. This service is designed to meet the treatment needs of each individual client in a structured, therapeutic and safe environment. We offer individualized treatment to clients with a wide-variety of needs, dual diagnoses, behavior management issues, sexual reactivity and clients with generally disruptive behaviors that prevent them from being successful in the traditional classroom setting. Our Day Treatment Program is staffed to handle the various psycho-educational and academic needs of each individual client, enabling them to experience success in school, many for the first time. We have found that many youth that previously struggled in larger placements are able to succeed within our Day Treatment model. The overall goal of the Day Treatment Program for all youth served is for the program to assist them in skill development in order to decrease and/or ameliorate their behavioral problems they are exhibiting. This will eventually result in successful return of the youth to the mainstream educational setting.
